How a hybrid system works

Sun first. Battery next. Grid last.

Most homes choose a hybrid system because it does two jobs at once: it lowers the bill on sunny days and keeps the essentials running when the power goes.

  1. 01

    Panels

Turn sunlight into power during the day. Even cloudy days produce some.

  2. 02

    Hybrid inverter

Converts it for your home and decides, second by second, where it goes.

  3. 03

    Battery

Stores what you do not use, for the evening and for outages.

  4. 04

    Your home

Runs on solar first, then battery. Heavy appliances stay on the grid.

  5. 05

    The grid

Tops up when the sun and battery cannot. Export only with approval.

System sizer

See what your home needs in two minutes.

Enter what you spend on electricity and what must stay on in an outage. The sizer suggests an inverter, battery and panel count, with a rough price and saving. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Questions

Questions we hear every week.

Can I run my geyser, oven or pool pump on a battery?

You can, but you usually should not. A geyser or oven can drain a home battery in under an hour. We normally wire these to the grid and use solar for them during the day only, while lights, fridges, Wi-Fi, TVs and the gate stay on the battery.

Do I need to register my system with the municipality?

If the system is connected to the municipal supply, which includes most hybrid systems, it needs to be approved as small-scale embedded generation by your municipality or Eskom, whichever supplies your meter. We prepare and submit the application for you. Backup-only systems that cannot feed into the grid follow simpler rules, and we confirm what applies at your address.

Can I sell power back to the grid?

Only with your supplier's approval and the right meter. Some municipalities credit power you export, at a rate they set, once your system is registered and a bidirectional meter is installed. Until then, the inverter is set so that no power flows back into the grid.

How long do the batteries last?

The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries we install are typically rated for 6 000 or more charge cycles and carry a manufacturer warranty of around ten years. The warranty terms for your exact battery are stated in your quote.

What happens when it is cloudy?

Panels still produce power on overcast days, just less of it. A hybrid system tops up the battery from the grid when the sun cannot, so your essentials stay on either way.

Is the site assessment really free?

Yes, inside our service area. A system designer visits, takes measurements and answers your questions. You get a written quote afterwards and there is no obligation to accept it.

Ready for a proper look at your home?
