You may still see adverts promising a tax rebate on home solar. That incentive has ended. Here is what is and is not available now, so you can plan with the right numbers.
For individuals: the rebate has ended
The solar panel tax rebate for individuals, under section 6C of the Income Tax Act, gave 25% of the cost of new panels back, up to R15 000. It applied only to panels brought into use between 1 March 2023 and 29 February 2024. It does not apply to systems installed after that.
For businesses: section 12B still applies
Businesses can still claim a capital allowance for renewable energy under section 12B. For solar PV with a capacity below 1 MW, the full cost can be deducted in the year the system is brought into use. Larger systems are written off over three years.
The enhanced 125% deduction under section 12BA was a temporary measure for assets brought into use between 1 March 2023 and 28 February 2025. It has ended.
What this means when you compare quotes
- For a home, the return comes from lower bills, not tax. Ask any installer to show their savings estimate and the tariff it assumes.
- For a business, ask your tax practitioner how section 12B applies to you before you finalise the budget.
- Be wary of any quote that still deducts the old individual rebate from the price.
This guide is general information, not tax advice. Your tax practitioner can confirm how the rules apply to your situation.
